L’arboreto – Teatro Dimora of Mondaino is a place of welcome and care for the creative processes of the contemporary scene: creative residences, meetings, workshops, shows, publishing.
It is a theatre centre since 1998. It’s recognized at national and international level for the quality and complexity of its activities. Among many initiatives, it aims at enhancing the culture of theatre and of performing arts through two fundamental objectives: training and creative residencies / knowledge transmission.
Mondaino (small village of 1,471 inhabitants) and Valle del Conca, on the border between Romagna and Marche, are our stopping and starting point to gather strength and reflect on tradition and modernity, the existing processes, and the new search. A residential workshop to understand the different expressions which are interpreted not only as a creative and artistic form, but also as a way of being and reacting, highlighting the inspiration and processes, theories and practices, even before the results. In a nine-hectare park with about 6,000 plants, The Teatro Dimora and the two Case foresteria make the Arboreto a unique structure in Italy and particularly suitable for research and production of new works.
Our projects want to act on the differences of the scenic arts in many of the possible theatres (?), encouraging young people – new generations of artists and public – in the visions of making theatre and in the experimentation of new contemporary creative languages.
In 2016, we have been awarded the prestigious Special Prize Ubu that affirms the quality and rigour of our twenty-year activity, with the following motivation: located in Mondaino, near Rimini, The Arboreto – Teatro Dimora is one of the most active and dynamic theatrical research centres of Italy, which reflects on the concept of residence since its foundation in 1998. In the last twenty years, it increasingly became the most important in the process of artistic creation. Aimed at young people, it is a permanent laboratory linking creativity and territory. It’s in a nine hectares wood, where the Teatro Dimora was also built in 2004, which is now the headquarter of the multiple activities of the centre.
After twenty-three years of activity, today the Arboreto – Teatro Dimora di Mondaino fully represent our first goal: to build up a common place for contemporary art, where to live for study and communication with the public, but, above all, to define new possibilities of meeting and relationship between people and artists. In particular, it recognizes the need for young people to interpret the “right to error” as an essential factor for their artistic and human growth.
In 2016, our Association promoted the construction of a new project that enhanced the individual experiences of historical and modern theaters of the Unione Valconca and, at the same time, the entire community of citizens and artists: Valle dei Teatri – Rete Teatrale Valconca. The Arboreto – Teatro Dimora di Mondaino, together with La Corte Ospitale di Rubiera, is recognized by the Emilia-Romagna Region and by Mic as a Centre of Residence of the Emilia-Romagna region since 2018.
Inaugurated in the spring of 2004, Teatro Dimora is an essential and simple work, functional to the project and inserted in the Valconca landscape as a large leaf lying on the lawn. The green, wood, bricks and glass are the eco-friendly elements that make up the structure, designed in harmony with the environment for the ethical need to create the balance between physical and cultural environment.
The Teatro Dimora, located in the wood of the Arboretum, is equipped with the most modern technologies and structures (modular platform, telescopic grandstand) that make it adaptable to the different needs of artists and contemporary arts, for training activities, creative residences, rehearsals for the production of new works, meetings and shows.
